“A Futuristic Osaka Overrun by Demonic Beasts”

The setting is a near-future Osaka, a city where monstrous creatures known as “Yōma” have suddenly appeared, plunging the world into chaos.
The protagonist, Shin, is a Yōma Hunter, a member of an organization dedicated to eradicating these otherworldly beings.

However, Shin has lost all memories of his past.
And his most trusted companion? None other than Lux, a former enemy Yōma who has transformed into the powerful weapon, “Yōkeitō”.
A “hero with no memory” and a “sword forged from a former enemy”—doesn’t that setup alone spark excitement?

Osaka’s cityscape is brought to life with stunningly detailed pixel art, creating an unparalleled sense of immersion.
The skies are filled with hovering cars, including a suspiciously familiar-looking delivery truck.
Towering giant crabs, sizzling takoyaki stands, and even the famous Kuidaore doll populate the streets, blending reality and fiction to create an Osaka that feels both fantastical and strikingly real.
Even fire safety equipment scattered throughout the city adds to the overall authenticity of the world.

The Yōma, Shin’s foes, are inspired by traditional Japanese yokai.
Their designs evoke a sense of familiarity—players might find themselves thinking, “Wait, haven’t I seen this somewhere before?”
This nostalgic connection turns each battle into more than just a fight—it becomes an experience that blends action with a deep sense of cultural history.

Combat System | Warp Out of Danger, Strike with Precision! Smooth Exploration × Exhilarating Action

The player controls the protagonist, Shin, as he explores “Osaka.”
This city is infested with Yōma, and numerous obstacles and traps stand in his way.
To combat these threats, Shin wields three main types of weapons:

  • Guns (Long-range attacks)
  • Melee Weapons (Close-combat attacks)
  • “Yōkeitō” (A mystical sword with special abilities)

There are various types of guns and melee weapons, which can be found during exploration or purchased from shops.
Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses—some have high attack power but slow speed, while others are extremely powerful but unusable underwater.
This variety allows players to customize their loadout to match their preferred playstyle, adding depth to the combat experience.

And at the heart of Shin’s combat abilities lies his trusted companion, “Yōkeitō.”
This mystical sword unlocks various attack techniques as Shin acquires new skills.

Additionally, the city of Osaka is filled with obstacles and mechanisms that hinder exploration.
The key to overcoming these challenges is Yōkeitō’s unique ability to manipulate the past.
With this power, Shin can restore objects that once existed, allowing him to solve puzzles and navigate through the city.

Furthermore, unlocking Yōkeitō’s skills grants access to a warp ability.
This warp is not just a means of transportation—it allows Shin to instantly retreat to a safe location in times of danger or quickly return to previously explored areas without the hassle of retracing his steps.
This dramatically enhances the ease of exploration, making Yōkeitō an indispensable tool not only in combat but also in traversal.

In battle, players can freely switch between a variety of weapons, while in exploration, Yōkeitō’s special abilities open new paths and possibilities.
This seamless blend of action and discovery creates an unparalleled sense of immersion, making players feel as if they have truly become Shin.

“Wait… have I really been playing for this long?”
Many players will likely find themselves so engrossed in the game that time simply flies by.

To be honest, I’ve never played a Metroidvania game before…

I had the opportunity to write an article about Blade Chimera, a Metroidvania game—but to be honest, I’ve never played a Metroidvania before.

This genre has a reputation for being challenging, and since I’m not particularly skilled at action games, I always hesitated to give it a try.
However, Blade Chimera was generating a lot of buzz across various media and social platforms, and its stylish action and meticulously crafted pixel art completely captivated me, leading me to finally take the plunge.

The moment I started playing, I was blown away by how fluidly the intricate pixel art moved on screen—it was mesmerizing!
And as I delved deeper into the richly detailed world of Osaka, I quickly became immersed, completely hooked from the start.

I also found myself deeply drawn into the story.
The backstory, where reality and fantasy intertwine, gave off a vibe reminiscent of the Shin Megami Tensei series, making me completely engrossed before I even realized it. (This is my personal impression.)

Moreover, the scenes where the protagonist, Shin, receives instructions via communication from an operator, had a certain charm that reminded me of a well-known spy game.
This subtle nod brought a nostalgic smile to my face, adding an unexpected layer of enjoyment to the experience.

My biggest concern was the “Metroidvania games are difficult” stereotype.
However, once I got into Blade Chimera, I was so immersed that I hardly noticed any difficulty at all.
I can’t compare it to other Metroidvania games, but I found it incredibly accessible and enjoyable.

I believe these factors contributed to that experience:

Simple and intuitive controls
A variety of weapons with distinct and easy-to-understand mechanics
Well-explained puzzles and mechanics
An incredibly immersive game world
A high-degree-of-freedom warp system

These elements come together seamlessly, making the game smooth and enjoyable even for players who aren’t experienced with action games.

In particular, the warp skill was a game-changer.
Unlike traditional save-point-based fast travel, it allows you to instantly move to various locations, significantly enhancing the fluidity of exploration.
It was incredibly useful for quickly returning to heal in dangerous situations or effortlessly revisiting areas that were initially challenging to reach.
This skill alone felt like an absolute lifesaver!

I was so absorbed in the game that I’d start playing while it was still bright outside—only to look up and realize the world outside had gone completely dark.

“As long as I can return to Blade Chimera, I can escape reality for a while.”
That sense of escape and relaxation was exactly what I needed.
